Play Therapy
Your child may have difficulty coping with change, developing relationships or communicating their feelings due to developmental delay or having a diagnosis such as ASD or ADHD.
Due to these delays your child may need additional support to develop these skills. Play therapy encourages children to freely express their feelings and desires through play, by giving them the vocabulary in a positive play-based environment.
Evidence shows that play therapy supports children to learn valuable life skills including; expressing their feelings, becoming flexible in transitions, adapting to routine changes, self-regulating their emotions, decreasing frequency and severity of meltdowns and developing social behaviours.

Why is play therapy different from other forms of children’s therapy?
- Play therapy stands apart because it places the child at the centre of the therapeutic process. In child-led play therapy, the child guides the play while the therapist builds genuine rapport and trust. Research shows that a strong, nurturing therapeutic relationship is one of the most important factors in helping children achieve meaningful progress.
- At Thrive Play Therapy, we also incorporate gentle psychoeducation—using books, videos and hands-on activities—to help children understand their emotions and develop the language to express how they feel. This combination of play and learning empowers children to make sense of their experiences in a safe and supportive way.
- If you’ve been searching for “children’s therapy near me,” you’re in the right place. Thrive Play Therapy comes to your home or to a local community space, making therapy more convenient and comfortable for your family. There is strong evidence that children make better progress when therapy happens in familiar, natural environments rather than in clinical settings.
- Thrive Play Therapy supports NDIS participants and others who do not have NDIS funding.
